Chip
Caldwell, President, Chip Caldwell & Associates, formerly Senior
Vice President, Premier Performance Services and Health Industry Executive
of Juran Institute, specializes in strategic deployment of clinical
and systems quality improvement and cost reduction initiatives in medical
centers, extended care facilities, integrated health systems, and health
plans, having previously served as President of the HCA Atlanta health
system, an eight hospital network with fifteen owned family practice
centers and over 250 contracted physicians. He also served as President/CEO,
HCA West Paces Medical Center in Atlanta, from 1986 through 1993. Under
his leadership, West Paces Medical Center began implementation of a
TQM program in 1987; during that time he developed a national reputation
in all aspects of TQM and strategy deployment. He served on the Baldrige
Foundation Board Support Team in 1999 and 2000 and was the only healthcare
representative on the U.S. Quality Council in 2000. His book, Mentoring
Strategic Change in Health Care: An Action Guide,(Quality Press, 1996)
has become a model text for education of boards, senior leaders, middle
managers, and health administration students, as well as, his edited
book, The Handbook for Managing Change in Healthcare (Quality Press,
1998), which includes chapters by many of the world leaders in healthcare.
His new book, Medication Safety and Cost Recovery: A Four-Step Approach
for Executives, co-authored by Charles Denham, MD, along with a companion
implementation guide, will be available July 2001 from Health Administration
Press. He has trained over 10,000 personnel in IBM, Scripps Health System,
Veterans' Administration, PruCare, Kaiser, the US. Navy, Premier, VHA,
and many others. As an internationally recognized speaker, Chip has
keynoted many leading conferences, including the National Patient Safety
Summit, Evidence-based Medicine Summit, JCAHO, AHA, Institute for Healthcare
Improvement, Australia Minister of Health Conference, National Healthcare
Forum, and Ontario Hospital Association. Chip was selected by the European
Organization for Quality to head the European Demonstration Project
in December 1994. As a recognized author , he has served on the editorial
advisory boards of ACHE's Health Administration Press, Aspen's Quality
Management in Healthcare, TQM, Quality Progress, and the AHA's National
Healthcare Forum.
