  • Manager Non-Negotiable Goal-Setting Workshop, as uncovered in our national Financial Quantum Improvers study, the traditional method of setting goals using comparative benchmarks fails. That bears repetition. The accepted method for establishing goals for managers delays implementation by six months to 1 year. Our Financial Quantum Improvers study found that Quantum Improvers utilize a radically different goal-setting process that gets into and out of the goal-setting process in one to four weeks, moving on the most vital action planning and implementation phase. This workshop aids to rapidly set non-negotiable goals for managers 1 week to 4 weeks prior to the kick-off of the 100-Day Workout Productivity Series.

  • 100-Day Productivity Workout Series for aggressive cost recovery- a more sophisticated enhancement to traditional Workouts & other rapid improvement approaches, the 100-Day Productivity Workout Series is a facilitated, quality-based, aggressive cost reduction approach designed to achieve aggressive cost recovery while improving or maintaining process quality in each 100-day project. Successful application candidates include ED Throughput, Surgery Throughput, Patient Care Throughput, & other processes in which capacity suboptimization and excess waits drive up cost of quality. No organization has yet to recovery "hard" bottomline savings of $1 million in the first 100-Day Productivity Workout. For information regarding this effective method, email us.

  • Case Studies highlighting aggressive Cost of Quality recovery, productivity optimization, "In Quality"/ "Out of Quality" staffing, and throughput improvement in Emergency Departments, Surgery, and Patient Care to improved worked hours per patient day.

  • Financial Quantum Improvers national study- download from Free Downloads section below the results of our assessment, in partnership with HMC, of characteristics of quantum improvers vs non-starters. This analysis of 200 organizations' cost data over the last year suggests differences between those that improved vs those that did not improve.

100-Day Workout Productivity Series- a more sophisticated enhancement to Workout & other rapid improvement approaches, the 100-Day Workout is a facilitated, quality-based, aggressive cost reduction approach designed to achieve rapid, aggressive cost recovery while improving or maintaining process quality in each 100-day cycle. Successful application candidates include ED Throughput, Surgery Throughput, Patient Care Throughput, & other processes in which capacity suboptimization and excess waits drive up cost of quality.

The 100-Day Workout Productivity Series, an adaptation of GM's PICOs approach, GE's Workout, and IHI's Lean Improvement methods, enables organizations to enjoy the benefits of Lean-Six Sigma without having to invest heavily in "Big 5" firms. And, it focuses on an oft-forgotten process - Productivity Optimization, "In Quality"/ "Out of Quality" staffing, and rapid response contigency plans to+/- 2% daily variances in goal worked hours per department.

Why a 100-Day Workout Productivity Series? Before reading further, how do you know if a 100-Day Workout Productivity Series is right for your organization? If one or more of the following statements is true for your organization, a 100-Day Workout Productivity Series was designed to alleviate these issues:

  • We have exhausted most cost reduction approaches currently in use in the industry.
  • We know we need help, but we don't think a costly "Big 5" slash & burn is necessary yet.
  • We have always been on the leading edge - we were the first to embrace quality improvement, the first to tackle medical errors, the first to deploy clinical case management, PICOs, and other improvement methods.
  • We have a serious cost problem.
  • We would like to accelerate improvement in a precise process - ED, Imaging, Patient Satisfaction, Operations Cost Improvement, Clinical Excellence, Supply Chain, Revenue Cycle, or others.
  • We desire to build the capability in our organization so that managers and facilitators can lead 100-Day Workouts across the entire organization.
  • We have a very effective strategic goal-setting and budgeting process, but would like to enhance progress toward our goals by introducing new tools and methods.

100-Day Workout Productivity Series to achieve quantum improvement in cost position

A revolutionary approach designed to drive quantum improvement in major strategic initiatives - The 100-Day Workout Productivity Series, following the 100-Day Plan management system, is designed to recover up to $300,000 in process waste for each 100-day project.

  • Productivity Optimization/ "In Quality"-"Out of Quality" staffing.
  • Emergency Department
  • Patient Care Throughput/ Discharge Time of Day
  • Clinical Effectiveness
  • Supply Chain
  • Span of Control
  • Revenue Cycle / Cash Acceleration
  • Other high leverage focus areas as determined

Key aspects of the 100-Day Workout Productivity Series include:

  • Manageable focus.
  • Cost of Quality recovery.
  • Accountable infrastructure.
  • Stretch goals from comparative benchmarks.
  • Disciplined execution intensity.
  • Apprenticing your staff.

100-Day Workout Productivity Series Features

Of the four methods in the Lean-Six Sigma suite, the 100-Day Workout Productivity Series process remains the most powerful in terms of rapid results and execution. The 100-Day Workout Productivity Series is built upon six critical success factors:

1. Manageable focus. A well known critical failure factor for achieving quantum results is biting off more than we can achieve - "scope creep" as it is sometimes called. Disciplining ourselves to set reasonable, measurable boundaries enables the organization to move past the planning phase quickly and into the all-important execution phase. To start, we organize to the high leverage processes:

  • Productivity Optimization/ "In Quality"-"Out of Quality" staffing.
  • Emergency Department
  • Patient Care Throughput
  • Clinical Effectiveness
  • Supply Chain
  • Span of Control
  • Revenue Cycle / Cash Acceleration
  • Other high leverage focus areas as determined

100-Day Workout Productivity Series can be tailored to any process as long as the cost of quality recovery potential justifies the intensity of a 100-Day Workout Productivity Series.

2. Cost of Quality Recovery. Every process is fraught with waste and needless complexity. These costs come in the form of inspection, rework, and work-arounds. In order to balance quality and cost goals, the 100-Day Workout Productivity Series encompasses tools and techniques to recover these costs versus the past "slash & burn" approach.

3. Accountable infrastructure. The most common failure factor found in financial disasters is the absence of the organizational will to execute. Establishing an effective infrastructure containing a proper linkage to the Balanced Scorecard, rewards & consequences management, and contingency planning is central to the 100-Day Workout Productivity Series process.

4. Comparative benchmarks to set non-negotiable goals for both cost and speed. The objective of this step is to get into and out of it as quickly as possible. Many organizations spend six months in "analysis paralysis." The 100-Day Workout Productivity Series accelerates this process by engaging managers to immediately begin executing toward 50% of the benchmark, saving the debate over the exact target until after successful Workout results have been achieved. This key "lesson learned" from our research of over 200 hospitals' improvement in cost position is vital to accelerate toward implementation versus waiting six to nine months to agree that the comparative benchmarks are valid.

5. Waste Reduction Solution Set Execution. If your managers are like most in today's environment, they may be heard saying, "I understand my comparative benchmark, but I have simply run out of both ideas and steam. We don't know where to turn". Provision of a process to generate an inexhaustible solution set is a non-delegable task of senior leadership, yet so many leave this activity to the managers - and they are failing. The 100-Day Workout Productivity Series provides numerous solution set development activities:

  • Waste Walk - managers engage in a 3-hour "waste walk" of their departments, after training in the seven categories of waste, to uncover opportunities to insert into their 100-Day Action Plans to recovery Cost of Quality.
  • 18 Productivity Optimization Solution Set. Based on Tom Nolan's 70 proven techniques to eliminate waste, managers are trained in application of the 18 change concepts to insert into their 100-Day Action Plans to recovery Cost of Quality.
  • Subject-Matter Experts (if needed).

6. Apprenticing organizational leaders. Building the organization's capability to launch 100-Day Workout Productivity Series across all strategic service lines and functional departments is critical to building the capacity to execute rapidly over time.

100-Day Workout Productivity Approach

  • Senior Leader Commitment. 2 weeks. Set 100-Day Workout Productivity Series expectations & create infrastructure.
  • Manager Non-Negotiable Goal-Setting Workshop. After acquisition of aggressive benchmarks using CCA's LA Confidential or another aggressive dataset, managers commit to close the gap - 1 week to 4 weeks. Set manager targets for fiscal year & Workout.
  • Kick-off. 1 week to 4 weeks after Goal-Setting Workshop.
    • 3-day kick-off. At conclusion of the 3-day launch, managers have executed the DO NOW tasks & planned to execute for the entire 100-Day Workout.
    • Monthly Progress Report. Every month, managers report status using a disciplined structure using EXCELerator (below).

    • Summation.
  • Stretch goal assessment and relaunch 100-Day Workout for the next cyle. 10-days.

Deployment Options

  • Apprentice Model. Our staff conduct the 100-Day Workout Productivity Series to assure rapid cost recovery and avoidance of pitfalls / false starts of attempting to self-implement, while apprenticing your staff to build your capabilities for rapid replication of this powerful method after our staff leave.
